Nicole Kidman presented five Constellation Iris watches with special numbers such as 1, 8, 28, 111 and 1895. 8 is an auspicious number in China , and in this particular context means "prosper"; 1895 is the date OMEGA established itself in China , symbolically commemorated by the number of Constellation Iris watches which have been specifically produced for the occasion. Nicole Kidman signed the boxes of the five watches, three of which will be sold at the OMEGA Boutique in Nanjing Road .

The press conference was followed by a visit to the impressive and luxurious OMEGA flagship Boutique in Nanjing Road . In the evening OMEGA hosted a private dinner for a select number of guests and a glamorous party rounded off this special day - an unforgettable occasion in true OMEGA style.

To celebrate the 111 year anniversary of the company's presence in China together with Nicole Kidman's first visit, OMEGA held two charity auctions on behalf of UNIFEM, the women's agency at the United Nations committed to advancing women's rights and gender equality. As a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM, Nicole Kidman presented her own watch the number 1, and the number 8 was sold at a silent auction during the party. Ten percent of the proceeds of all sales during the evening will be donated to UNIFEM. As an additional gesture of solidarity for this worthwhile cause and until 16 July 2006 , the two OMEGA Shanghai boutiques will also contribute ten percent of their sales of the limited edition Constellation Iris to UNIFEM.

Nicole Kidman was chosen to become an OMEGA ambassador because of the values she shares with the company. As an Oscar-winning actress of international renown, she has established a reputation for choosing challenging and diverse roles which have brought her critical acclaim, and confirm her immense versatility as an actress. Universities, Women's Federation sweep Gender Facility second round
Mon, 2006-05-01 13:06

Seven groups took away grant awards totaling USD 200,000 to tackle the gender-related issues of HIV/AIDS, migration, political participation and domestic violence, the United Nations Theme Group on Gender announced on April 27 in Beijing, marking the second anniversary of China Gender Facility.

Most winners in the first round of the Facility's grants competition had a governmental or academic background, and the trend was reinforced this year. Of the seven grantees, selected from a total of 68 proposals, three are Women's Federation branches (from Xuzhou, Inner Mongolia and Guangxi) and four are research centers affiliated to Beijing University, Beijing Normal University, Huazhong Normal University in Wuhan and Yangzhou Party School in Jiangsu.

UNIFEM gender specialist, Guo Ruixiang (郭瑞香), explained that winners were chosen for their research and advocacy ability, and that this tended to favour groups that are good at networking and able to exert stronger influence on policymakers.

Guo also acknowledged that some grassroots NGOs had applied unsuccessfully.

Renowned Chinese women's activist, Professor Wu Qing (吴青), who was invited to speak at the award ceremony, later told China Development Brief that her group, the Rural Women's Culture and Development Centre, had not known about the Facility, although it has years of experience working to promote women's political participation and protect women migrants' rights.

Established in September 2004 and administered by UNIFEM, the China Gender Facility aims to advance gender equality and women's empowerment with funding support from UN agencies and other multilateral and bilateral development agencies, notably DFID, AusAID, UNFPA, ILO and UNICEF.

The China Gender Facility, backed up by the UN, is a development program to help local governments and organizations in China promote gender equality.

With many women facing unemployment and domestic violence, this project will collect more accurate information on the situation of Chinese women and hopefully enhance people's awareness of their situation.

China has been working hard on gender equality. But due to lack of experience and money, research and trainings in this area is falling behind in China 's rapid modernization process.

A high unemployment rate for women means many are completely reliant on their husbands for their livelihood. Many women are subject to domestic violence, and the suicide rate among Chinese women is the highest in the world.

Liu Bohong, deputy director of the Women Study Institute of China raises her concerns.

"I believe there is now a ‘back dash' on gender equality in some areas under the current market economy and a globalization environment. A woman may be viewed as a commodity. But the public is not well aware of this problem and we lack effective policy and regulations to prevent this growing inequality."

Liu Bohong says gender awareness attracts little attention from the mainstream of Chinese society while lawmakers and women themselves still don't understand the concept of gender equality. In terms of gender studies, China is below international standards, challenged by a lack of both professionals and money.

One example given by the expert is that she can't get accurate information about how many Chinese women are experiencing domestic violence or have lost their jobs due to gender discrimination.

Efforts are being made to monitor the situation by both the government and NGOs.

For instance, some researchers are drafting plans to give ‘widow's pensions' to unemployed women whose husbands have passed away.

In the Uygur Autonomous Region in the west of China , women from ethnic groups are getting more protection from domestic violence, in a new project sponsored by the UN.

It is being funded by the new China Gender Facility, under the UN Theme Group on Gender. The group aims to aid research and policy to promote gender equality.

Khalid Malik, the UN ambassador to China has experience with many different UN agencies. He says the China Gender Facility will hopefully build a solid foundation for other UN agencies in China and their work on gender equality.

"We have very practical programs to reduce poverty, to strengthen girls' education, to enhance minority women's understanding of rights. But to make those practical programs most useful, you need a solid understanding of the issues themselves. And this facility is about making these issues better understood. Because if we can have people talking about the real issues, that will spur them to take action.."

The first group of 9 projects has been financed for the next 5 years. The money will be used for information collecting, social aid to women, and training people about the importance of gender equality.

According to Guo Ruixiang , China programme specialist for UNIFEM, the executing agency, funds have now reached nearly USD 1 million, and are expected to grow. AusAID also appears poised to make a significant contribution.

Nearly half of them are research institutes attached to universities: Tsing Hua University ; Northwest Industrial University in Xi'an , Shaanxi ; Jiangxi School of Administration and Kunming Party School in Yunnan . Other grants went to government initiated NGOs such as the China Disabled Persons Federation, the Women's Research Institute attached to All-China Women's Federation, Xinjiang Province Women's Federation and the China Employment Promotion Association, newly established under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Henan Community Education Centre, headed by activist Liang Jun, is the only ‘grassroots' grantee in the current round.

Among the issues addressed by the proposals are domestic violence, employment, gender mainstreaming, capacity building of policy makers, and concerns related to older and disabled women.

Ms. Hong Tianhui, All-China Women's Federation Secretariat First Secretary, Mr. Malik, the coordinator of UN China, Mr. Voumard, Chairmen of UNTGG and UNICEF Representative in China, Mr. Davis, the UK's Department of International Development (DFID) Representative in China, Ms. Lazo, UNIFEM Regional Programme Director for East and Southeast Asia, representatives of UN China, Chinese government, NGOs and media were presented at this launch.

Ms. Hong Tianhui, All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) Secretariat First Secretary represented ACWF to congratulate the launch of Facility. She said the Gender Facility created a collaboration platform for UN organizations, donors, and Chinese government, women's organizations, other national departments of policies, research institutes, NGOs that are willing to promote gender advocacy and practice. It was an innovative and catalytic attempt. She suggested that the Facility should focus research on advance gender equality, strengthen the legislated gender perspectives, and strategies of gender mainstreaming, and support probation projects that focus on women's participation in politics, employment equality, legislation of against domestic violence, sex ratios at birth, issues of girls, HIV and gender, gender and aging, and reproductive health etc. Under the framework of guiding documents such as Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action approved in the Forth World Conference on Women, Millennium Declaration approved in UN Millennium Summit, the Facility should make systematic investigation and strategic research on the present situation of China gender, and provide guiding suggestions. The accomplishment of research should be publicized through varied forms, and the theory of gender equality should be advocated in governmental organizations, to make positive impact on the legislation and execution of Chinese policies.

Why the Facility needs to be launched 10 years after the Forth World Conference on Women Beijing? Mr. Malik, the Coordinator of UN China answered the questions from our newspaper and said, “In the 16 UN China organizations, every one has different responsibilities. Many organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF, UNIFEM, all have launched a lot of programmes to advance gender equality from aspects of laws, aid-the-poor, health etc. The Facility is only one of those programmes, and it focuses on research and advocacy. I hope the launch of this special Facility can help to create a long-term effective mechanism, and become the core and basis of other gender equality programmes. Research and Advocacy aim to recognize and solve gender related issues better, solve issues such as sex ration at birth, women's health, and domestic violence etc. It also needs to advance people's consciousness.” He also emphasized the role of media, and people should be encouraged to discuss these issues through media.

China Gender Facility for Research and Advocacy confirmed twelve key research and advocacy areas, including the strategic research linked to the revision of the Law of Protection for Women's Rights and Interests; the links among gender, MDG, and xiaokang society; the collection and use of gender disaggregated data; sex ratios at birth and girls; gender, employment and society assurance; gender and population flow; the role of women's organizations and civil society; adolescent girls; violence against women; and trafficking.
