UNIFEM is the women's fund at the United Nations.

Established in 1976, UNIFEM provides technical and financial assistance to innovative approaches that support women's empowerment and gender equality. Placing the advancement of women's human rights centre stage, UNIFEM China focuses on three main goals:

Engendering Governance and Promoting Women's Political Empowerment

Strengthening Women's Economic Rights

Supporting Women's Human Rights, including the Elimination of Violence against Women, and Gender and HIV/AIDS .

UNIFEM China cooperates with governments, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and women to:

, design and implement plans, policies and programmes that promote gender equality

, sensitize institutions and decision makers to gender issues and concerns

, strengthen the capacity of women to express their opinion in all levels of society.

UNIFEM China uses two international agreements--the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action from the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995 - to guide its programmes and work.
