The United Nations Development Fund for Women, established in 1976, promotes gender equality, womenĄŻs empowerment and mainstreaming gender into decision-making and policy implementation. UNIFEM provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies that pursue gender equity and equality and address gender based imbalances and inequalities. UNIFEM established its China office in 1998.
UNIFEM China focuses its work on three main goals:
- engendering governance and promoting the political empowerment of women at all stages of the political process and at all levels
- strengthening womenĄŻs economic rights and capacity
- supporting womenĄŻs human rights, including eliminating violence against women, checking the growing feminisation of HIV/AIDS and dealing with gender issues arising from human trafficking and migration
UNIFEM China serves as a secretariat for the UN Theme Group on Gender. Mandated to provide a platform for inter-agency policy dialogues and coordination on gender and development issues, composed of representatives from UN agencies, international NGOS, development agencies and sharing a common pool of funds, the UNTGG supports the Government of China in achieving gender equality. The UNTGG set up the China Gender Facility in September 2004 to fund innovative and catalytic projects that research contemporary gender issues and promote gender equality concerns among policy makers and civil society groups. Consequently, UNIFEM China performs two important roles:
promotes gender equality and gender mainstreaming in the UN Country Team by acting as the Secretariat to the UN Theme Group on Gender
serves as an implementing agency for the China Gender Facility |
